英検1級英作文サンプル 日本で死刑を禁止すべきか？

Should the death penalty be banned in Japan?
2017年1回の出題。
死刑は問題集に載っていることが多い定番のテーマ。
でも書きにくいですね。
それほど頻繁に出題されるテーマではないですが、2次試験で出るかもしれません。
エッセイを書くことで、自分の意見を英語で整理しておくといいです。
英作文(210語)
Some people say that the death penalty in Japan should be continued to compensate for criminal acts. However, I think it should be banned for the following three reasons.
First reason is that death penalty is the cruel and inhumane punishment. Even though criminals commit serious crimes, they also have human rights. Most of developed countries have regarded the capital punishment as invading human right and already banned it. Japan should also rethink the importance of the human right of criminals.
Second reason is that there is a possibility that the perpetrator will be rehabilitated. During serving in prisons, instead of the capital punishment, they understand what is right or wrong and might be completely rehabilitated. It is highly likely that they will rejoin and contribute to our society.
Third reason is that there were some cases of people who were innocent but arrested for committing serious crimes. If they are wrongly imprisoned, they can be released from prison and given compensation. However, if wrongful execution were done, it would never be righted.
For the three reasons mentioned above, I think we can say with confidence that the death penalty should be prohibited in Japan. The Japanese government has to convince their citizens to understand the value of human rights.

日本の死刑は、犯罪行為を償うために継続されるべきであると言う人もいます。ただし、以下の3つの理由から禁止すべきだと思います。
第一の理由は、死刑は残酷で非人道的な罰であるということです。犯罪者は重大な犯罪を犯しますが、人権も持っています。先進国のほとんどは死刑を人権を侵害していると見なし、すでにそれを禁止しています。日本もまた、犯罪者の人権の重要性を再考すべきです。
第二の理由は、加害者が更生する可能性があることです。死刑の代わりに、刑務所での服役中に、彼らは何が正しいか間違っているかを理解して、完全に更生するかもしれません。彼らが再び参加し、私たちの社会に貢献する可能性が高いのです。
第三の理由は、無実であるが重大な犯罪で逮捕された人がいたということです。彼らが誤って投獄された場合、彼らは刑務所から釈放され、補償を受けることができます。しかし、不法な処刑が行われた場合、それは(後から)決して正すことはできないのです。
以上の3つの理由から、日本で死刑を禁止すべきであると自信を持って言えると思います。日本政府は、市民に人権の価値を理解するよう説得しなければなりません。
解説
英検1級のエッセイで大事なことは、自分の意見が言いやすい立場を選ぶことです。
自分の意見を言いやすいとは、3つの理由が書きやすいという意味です。
私自身は死刑は必要と考えていますが、死刑反対の方が書きやすいです。
ですから反対の立場で書くこととしました。
総評
今回は以下の理由で英作文を書きました。
- 死刑は残酷である
- 更生する可能性がある
- 無罪の可能性がある
いつものテンプレートのパターン１を使いました。
210語となりました。
これがテンプレート パターンだと190語になるわけですから、テンプレートの使い分けで時数調整できるのは大きいです。

Q1. If capital punishment is abolished, is it possible to deter criminal act like murder?
A1.I would say it is possible because a life sentence also works to prevent crime. Serving prison for a long time is regarded as heavy punishment rather than capital punishment because it limits freedom
Q2. When it comes to the cost, I think death penalty is much cheaper than dealing with criminals in prison for rest of their life. Is it reasonable to use so much tax money to keep criminals in prisons?
A2. It is reasonable to keep perpetrators in jails for the rest of their life. Some research suggested that keeping them in prison is cheaper than death penalty when considering the cost of death penalty such as legal costs that includes number of appeals and security.
Q3. Is it possible to offer closure or solace to victims’ families without capital punishment?
A3. I would say it is possible because a life sentence is much heavier than capital punishment when thinking it limit freedom.
