英検1級英作文サンプル 国際的スポーツイベント開催はデメリット上回る？
当サイトでは以下のスタンスで英作文を書いています。

それでは今回の課題について説明していきます。
今回の課題は2010年2回で出題された課題です。英語ですと以下。
Do the benefits of hosting international sporting events outweigh the disadvantages?

2010年と言うことで、旧型式の英作文スタイル。下にある言葉を3つ選んで書かないといけませんでした。
ただし、今回は新形式で書いてみます。
話変わりますが、英検1級英作文の参考書と言えば、ジャパンタイムズのヤツです。これさえあれば、英作文だけでなく、2次試験でも使えます。
英作文(203語)
Some people say that hosting international sporting events such as the Olympics and World Cup is quite beneficial. However, I think holding sports events cannot outweigh the disadvantages such as initial costs, maintenance costs for the following three reasons.
The first reason is that preparation of the events will need additional tax payment from citizens. For example, to hold the Olympics, new sport facilities such as stadiums and gymnasiums are required. These initial costs are too huge and will likely be a huge burden for people.
The second reason is that maintenance costs for the above facilities will be economically burdensome on locals. For example, Nagano city has been suffering huge debts for maintenance after the Nagano Olympic Games.
The final reason is that the beneficial effects of holding international sport competitions are too small to pay off all costs mentioned above. During the events, the host city attracts many people around the world. However, that cannot continue forever. After the international events, all the economic benefits will diminish. It is difficult to fully compensate for all the preparation and maintenance costs.
For the three reasons mentioned above, I think we can say with confidence that hosting international sporting events cannot outweigh disadvantages.

オリンピックやワールドカップなどの国際的なスポーツイベントを主催することは非常に有益であると言う人もいます。ただし、スポーツイベントの開催は、以下の3つの理由から、初期費用、維持費などのデメリットを上回ることはできないと思います。
第一の理由は、イベントの準備には市民からの追加の税金の支払いが必要になるということです。たとえば、オリンピックを開催するには、スタジアムや体育館などの新しいスポーツ施設が必要です。これらの初期費用は高すぎるため、人々にとって大きな負担になる可能性があります。
第二の理由は、上記施設の維持管理費が地元住民の経済的負担となることです。例えば、長野市は長野五輪後の維持管理に多額の借金を抱えています。
最後の理由は、国際的なスポーツイベントを開催することの有益な効果が小さすぎて、上記のすべての費用を完済できないことです。イベント期間中、開催都市は世界中の多くの人々を集めます。しかし、それは永遠に続くことはできません。国際的なイベントの後、すべての経済的利益は減少します。すべての準備と維持費を完全に補償することは困難です。
上記の3つの理由から、国際的なスポーツイベントの開催は不利な点を上回ることは出来ないと自信を持って言えます。
解説
オリンピックや国際スポーツ関連なら、ほとんど同じロジックで英作文が書けます。
今回も2018年に出題された東京オリンピックの是非の英作文の内容とロジックは同じ。
あとは書いている時の気分で、単語とか言い回しが少し変わる程度です。
総評
理由は以下としました。
- スタジアムや体育館などのインフラの初期投資が高い⇒国民の負担になる
- オリンピック後の上記設備の維持コストが高い⇒国民の負担になる
- オリンピック期間中に得られる利益で、上記コストの完済は出来ない可能性がある。⇒結局借金で国民負担
このテーマは非常に書きやすいですし、話しやすいです。本番で出題されてほしいですが、中々そうはいかないかもしれませんね。
表現・語彙
基本的に東京オリンピックの是非と同じような単語を使ってます。
「主催する」、「開催する」ですが、hostやholdを使って重複を少しでも避けるようにしましょう。
あとinternational sporting eventはsports eventやinternatinal sports competitionみたいな感じで言い換えています。
質疑応答(面接対策)
面接の際に聞かれそうな質問と、私の回答例を書いてみました。
※)英検1級では、兎に角沈黙しないで自分の意見を言い切ることが大事です。
相手の質問に直接答えて、その後に理由を伝えるようにしましょう。
Q1. Sapporo city would like to host the winter Olympic in 2030. What do you think about it?
A1. Sapporo said that the Olympics will be hosted using the facilities that it already has. I heard the same explanation when Tokyo became the host city of the 2020 games. However, the total cost is at least three times larger than the original estimate. First of all, we have to check the Tokyo Olympics.
Q2. What should the local governments do to stimulate local economy except Sorting events?
A2. The local government has to attract factories and offices of big companies by deducting tax payment. If there are a lot of offices and factories, it increase jobs and that will stimulates economy for a long time.
Q3. Why does Japan tried to host the big sport events so many times even though they failed financially.
A3. I think one of the reasons is that the connection between politicians and some industries is quite strong in Japan. They just want to make business by using tax money. For them it does not matter whether sporting events will be beneficial or not to our society entirely.
